How To Be a Solo Female Traveler

Solo travel is exciting, thrilling, liberating and eye-opening. It can also be difficult and dangerous especially for female travellers. The world is slowly warming up to having women enjoy equal privileges in all aspects and travel should not be any different. Below are some ways of enjoying solo travel as a woman.

Over Prepare

I know this sounds impossible and like bad advice, but you will see the benefits of it once you are off travelling and exploring the world. Over preparing helps you be ready for whatever situation that may come up during your experience. That way, you will not be discouraged from continuing because you will have the benefit of hindsight. Whether that means carrying extra socks, more than enough money or a whole first aid kit, the simply do it. You might end up not using the kit, but you are better off having it, than needing it and missing it.

Let people know where you are

You do not have to travel with anyone if you do not want to. However, you don’t stand to lose anything by letting people know where you will be. There is a sense of liberation that comes with getting lost in a new city. But as part of over-preparing, letting at least two people know where you will be travelling to will allow you get help if the need ever arises. It will also give you peace of mind knowing that help is just a call or text away.

Avoid Shady Places and Open Danger

Again, being new in a city gives you a feeling of freedom and invincibility. Be careful, however. There is nothing wrong with stepping out of your comfort zone and trying out new things. That does not, however, mean that you blindly walk into dangerous situations. For example, do not walk into dark alleys alone, do not keep the company of doubtful people and do not ignore your instincts whenever they raise red flags.

Make a network of friends

Social media is littered with numerous solo travel groups and platforms. For example, Girls Love Solo Travel is a Facebook page dedicated to solo female travellers. There, you can make a ton of friends who have been to the destination you want to go to. You can even meet with people who are travelling at the same time as you and you can travel solo together.

Have Fun

As much as you need to be cautious and ready for anything, you should also enjoy your experience. Why else should you spend half your life saving for such a moment if you are not going to make the best of it?
